A layered site above Frodsham
Forest Hills Hotel stands on the long-established Mersey View leisure site on Overton Hill. The story of this location is more complex than a single building. Visitors were coming to Mersey View by the mid-1860s, when tearooms and pleasure grounds served people climbing Frodsham Hill.
The site later became known for attractions including a helter-skelter, donkey rides, swing boats and a roller-skating rink. During the First World War, the roller rink was converted into Frodsham Auxiliary Military Hospital. Local historical sources record that more than 3,000 patients were treated there.
From wartime hospital to ballroom and club
After the war, Mersey View returned to entertainment and social use. Dancing, cabaret and live music became an important part of its identity. The Beatles performed at the Ballroom, Mersey View Pleasure Grounds, on 20 April 1963.
The Mersey View Club remained part of the site during the 1980s. The present Forest Hills Hotel was constructed in 1988, so it is important not to describe the modern hotel itself as the former wartime hospital. The interest comes from the many layers of activity across the wider site and the older Mersey View areas.
Reported paranormal activity
Accounts shared with DeadLive include dark moving shadows, a man dressed in dark clothing, a woman apparently asking for help and the unexplained sound of children in parts of the older Mersey View areas.
These are reported experiences rather than proven facts or promises of activity. Every investigation is different. DeadLive approaches the venue with an open mind while also considering lighting, acoustics, airflow, neighbouring rooms and other ordinary explanations.
Sandstone and the residual-energy question
Frodsham Hill forms part of Cheshire’s sandstone ridge. One idea discussed within paranormal investigation is that stone may retain impressions of past events, creating what investigators call residual activity. This is a theory to explore, not an established scientific mechanism.
The investigation will ask whether repeated sounds, shadows or impressions behave like a replay, appear to respond intelligently or can be explained by the environment.
